Who the Hell is Fletcher? | Uncharted 1 | Part 2

Welcome back to Uncharted 1! In part two, we analyze our second gameplay video where Nathan traverses unfamiliar ruins looking for Elena and clues to El Dorado. Notably, we talk about the miracle map (no way it's still in the plane), Nathan and Eddy Raja's background, and who else may be involved in all of this. Also discussed, is the imbalanced gameplay and enemies' sudden switch to English.

Don't forget to watch or play along - gameplay is posted weekly on our YouTube channel! We'll continue to play Uncharted: Drake's Fortune and analyze it in our podcast - join us in the coming weeks as join Nathan Drake on the trail to El Dorado.

00:00:00 --> 00:00:02 There's not that much that happens. Let's just
00:00:02 --> 00:00:05 get it out of the way. It's going to be a short
00:00:05 --> 00:00:09 episode. A lot of gameplay versus cutscene in
00:00:09 --> 00:00:12 this episode. Due to that, the out of context
00:00:12 --> 00:00:16 summary is severely lacking. But why don't I
00:00:16 --> 00:00:20 just read you what I have? Okay, let's hear it.
00:00:20 --> 00:00:24 In this episode, how many crashes can we survive?
00:00:25 --> 00:00:28 And is there really not a more direct route?
00:00:29 --> 00:00:34 And that's all we got. Thank you for coming back
00:00:34 --> 00:00:36 for our replay reviews. My name is Leah. And
00:00:36 --> 00:00:38 my name is Kathy. We are two friends who are
00:00:38 --> 00:00:41 here to replay, review, and analyze your favorite
00:00:41 --> 00:00:44 video games. And since Kathy has never seen the
00:00:44 --> 00:00:46 games before, it helps me view them through her
00:00:46 --> 00:00:48 fresh eyes, almost like I'm discovering them
00:00:48 --> 00:00:50 again for the first time. We hope it will be
00:00:50 --> 00:00:59 a similar experience for you. I want our listeners
00:00:59 --> 00:01:02 to know how much Leah enjoyed playing this game.
00:01:02 --> 00:01:07 She loved these fight scenes. If it wasn't too
00:01:07 --> 00:01:12 late for me to return the game. Okay, well, scene
00:01:12 --> 00:01:14 one is chapter four. I have one bullet point.
00:01:15 --> 00:01:18 We fight through the jungle forever until we
00:01:18 --> 00:01:21 find the crashed plane with the map still inside.
00:01:22 --> 00:01:25 And how is that map still intact? And how did
00:01:25 --> 00:01:29 it not get stolen yet? General rules of airflow
00:01:29 --> 00:01:31 lead me to believe that that map should not still
00:01:31 --> 00:01:36 be in that plane, but we'll give it the benefit
00:01:36 --> 00:01:39 of the doubt. Should we move on to chapter five?
00:01:39 --> 00:01:43 Yes. I fight and scramble my way through the
00:01:43 --> 00:01:46 fortress, and we eventually find Elena's parachute,
00:01:47 --> 00:01:50 and not long after, spot her in the distance.
00:01:50 --> 00:01:54 Nathan continues traversing the fortress, trying
00:01:54 --> 00:01:59 to track down Elena. My single note was the scene
00:01:59 --> 00:02:03 where you have a microphone and Nate just decides
00:02:03 --> 00:02:05 to speak into the microphone some gibberish.
00:02:05 --> 00:02:07 I don't even know if he knows the language. But
00:02:07 --> 00:02:11 why on earth would that be your first reaction
00:02:11 --> 00:02:14 to seeing a microphone is to speak into it, not
00:02:14 --> 00:02:18 knowing who's on the other side and if it gives
00:02:18 --> 00:02:21 away your location? Yeah, I guess he really had
00:02:21 --> 00:02:23 to go through that gate. Although it was kind
00:02:23 --> 00:02:26 of funny that he... Thought he pulled it off,
00:02:26 --> 00:02:30 but he didn't. Yeah. But also, why did they start
00:02:30 --> 00:02:32 speaking English? There he is. Get him. Like,
00:02:32 --> 00:02:37 why? Where'd that come from? All right. Are we
00:02:37 --> 00:02:39 ready for chapter six? We're flying through this.
00:02:40 --> 00:02:44 This one has the most notes for me. My first
00:02:44 --> 00:02:48 note is that Nathan recognizes a tower from the
00:02:48 --> 00:02:51 map, but he gets shot at while analyzing the
00:02:51 --> 00:02:54 map. And after some more blasting. And scrambling.
00:02:54 --> 00:02:58 He finds a room with an English helmet. He says,
00:02:58 --> 00:03:01 hmm, these aren't Spanish, they're English. My
00:03:01 --> 00:03:04 next note is that he stumbles across this wall
00:03:04 --> 00:03:07 where there's a Fletcher. Yeah, who the hell
00:03:07 --> 00:03:10 is Fletcher? He's looking at this map on the
00:03:10 --> 00:03:14 wall that says Fletcher. We've gone to the Great
00:03:14 --> 00:03:17 Tower. I pray that you will meet us there. Signed,
00:03:17 --> 00:03:19 Frances Drake. And then, of course, we start
00:03:19 --> 00:03:22 getting shot at. Further on, we find a spyglass,
00:03:22 --> 00:03:24 which Nathan uses to spot a familiar building,
00:03:25 --> 00:03:29 some sunken ships, and Elena, as well as enemies
00:03:29 --> 00:03:33 who are aiming at her. So we shoot to save her.
00:03:33 --> 00:03:35 She runs away as the attention is now turned
00:03:35 --> 00:03:40 on us. And Nathan gets a grenade launched. Unconscious.
00:03:41 --> 00:03:45 Well, also, I do want to backpedal. really quickly
00:03:45 --> 00:03:49 though those boats that we see is that the same
00:03:49 --> 00:03:52 boat related to the boat we saw in part one i
00:03:52 --> 00:03:54 think those are the spanish ships i think he
00:03:54 --> 00:03:57 came here looking for the spanish because he
00:03:57 --> 00:04:00 says they never left so i think those are like
00:04:00 --> 00:04:03 the spanish galleons or whatever they're referred
00:04:03 --> 00:04:09 to as yep that's pretty much all my notes okay
00:04:09 --> 00:04:13 well nathan wakes up In a cell to rocks being
00:04:13 --> 00:04:17 tossed at him. It's Elena. She knows a lot of
00:04:17 --> 00:04:19 random info about the structure of this jail.
00:04:20 --> 00:04:24 And she uses it to formulate a plan to free him.
00:04:24 --> 00:04:27 While she leaves to find something to accomplish
00:04:27 --> 00:04:31 this breakout with, this guy, Eddie Raja, walks
00:04:31 --> 00:04:35 up. They seem to know each other. It seems like
00:04:35 --> 00:04:37 he and Nathan have a history. Maybe Nathan was
00:04:37 --> 00:04:41 on his team, just like how Elena is contracting
00:04:41 --> 00:04:44 him. Maybe he used to be part of his gang, and
00:04:44 --> 00:04:47 then he went his own way, went independent. It
00:04:47 --> 00:04:50 does seem like he's a third party. Like, he's
00:04:50 --> 00:04:54 not connected to Roman and Navarro, which we'll
00:04:54 --> 00:04:56 learn in Chapter 7. So if you have nothing else
00:04:56 --> 00:04:58 on Chapter 6, should we move on? Yeah, I only
00:04:58 --> 00:05:02 have one note on that. Okay, Chapter 7. Elena
00:05:02 --> 00:05:05 busts him out with the jeep. They make a run
00:05:05 --> 00:05:08 for it. They make a drive for it, I guess. And
00:05:08 --> 00:05:11 she asks him, who was that guy? And he says,
00:05:11 --> 00:05:14 just an old business associate, and then gets
00:05:14 --> 00:05:16 cut off. So I think you're on the right track
00:05:16 --> 00:05:18 with him, them having worked together before,
00:05:18 --> 00:05:22 unless he was just BSing her just to give her
00:05:22 --> 00:05:26 an answer, you know. In the chase, they end up
00:05:26 --> 00:05:29 with the butt of the car hanging over a ledge
00:05:29 --> 00:05:33 when Eddie catches up to them. Eddie wants the
00:05:33 --> 00:05:36 map. He says, I bet you're working for them,
00:05:36 --> 00:05:40 too. Who's them? Is that Roman? Think so, unless
00:05:40 --> 00:05:43 there's another group of people on the island.
00:05:43 --> 00:05:46 I think so too, but so then working for them
00:05:46 --> 00:05:49 too. Who's the other two? Because he didn't say,
00:05:49 --> 00:05:51 I bet you're working for them. He said, I bet
00:05:51 --> 00:05:54 you're working for them too. So who else is working
00:05:54 --> 00:05:57 for them? Maybe another associate similar to
00:05:57 --> 00:05:59 Nathan? Like another independent contractor?
00:06:00 --> 00:06:04 So we don't know who they are, but anyways, Nate
00:06:04 --> 00:06:08 is like, I have a plan. And then he just... launches
00:06:08 --> 00:06:13 the car backwards into the water it seems shockingly
00:06:13 --> 00:06:17 high for one for two he was like on elena watch
00:06:17 --> 00:06:20 out for the cliffs watch out for the cliffs only
00:06:20 --> 00:06:25 to by choice reverse off of it and he was emphasizing
00:06:25 --> 00:06:28 on hold on tight maybe you could have just mumbled
00:06:28 --> 00:06:30 under under your breath that hey we're gonna
00:06:30 --> 00:06:33 i'm gonna go backwards give the girl a bit of
00:06:33 --> 00:06:37 a notice And the thing is, he also doesn't have
00:06:37 --> 00:06:40 a Ziploc bag to put his map into it. So it's
00:06:40 --> 00:06:42 going to get soaking wet. So you might as well
00:06:42 --> 00:06:44 just have given the map to them. How has this
00:06:44 --> 00:06:48 map survived so much? Well, that's all I had
00:06:48 --> 00:06:51 for part two. How are you feeling about the game
00:06:51 --> 00:06:54 so far? I do wish there was a bit more substance
00:06:54 --> 00:06:56 to the cutscenes. I don't know how I feel about
00:06:56 --> 00:07:00 Nathan Drake quite yet. He's not like he's irresponsible,
00:07:00 --> 00:07:05 but I don't know. We'll see more. He's got tunnel
00:07:05 --> 00:07:09 vision. Yeah. He reacts more than he plans. But
00:07:09 --> 00:07:11 I don't dislike him. There's nothing that he
00:07:11 --> 00:07:14 does wrong that makes me not like him. But there's
00:07:14 --> 00:07:16 nothing he does that makes me like him. And then,
00:07:16 --> 00:07:18 yeah, I mean, this was obviously a gameplay heavy
00:07:18 --> 00:07:22 part. And I wouldn't have so many issues with
00:07:22 --> 00:07:24 the gameplay if they mixed it up a little bit.
00:07:24 --> 00:07:27 But it's just like every chapter is jumping and
00:07:27 --> 00:07:29 shooting. I wish there was just more exploring,
00:07:29 --> 00:07:33 less shooting. Yeah, or help me find a grapple
00:07:33 --> 00:07:37 gun at some point so I can grapple up walls instead
00:07:37 --> 00:07:39 of just frogging up the wall all the time like
00:07:39 --> 00:07:42 an idiot. Or would it be better to have a Gatlin
00:07:42 --> 00:07:44 gun like you did in Red Dead Redemption? It'd
00:07:44 --> 00:07:46 be better because I would turn around and just
00:07:46 --> 00:07:56 shoot myself. Oh my god, Leah. That is an intense
00:07:56 --> 00:08:01 reaction. So I recorded... four sections or like
00:08:01 --> 00:08:03 five groups of four chapters you know i recorded
00:08:03 --> 00:08:07 a chunk at a time for this episode for whatever
00:08:07 --> 00:08:10 reason it glitched and so the video file of the
00:08:10 --> 00:08:12 recording was like just a black screen no sound
00:08:12 --> 00:08:15 so i had to replay like four chapters of the
00:08:15 --> 00:08:18 game most of which are in this part which might
00:08:18 --> 00:08:21 be why i'm a little extra salty in this episode
00:08:21 --> 00:08:24 maybe i'm just bad at it i don't know that could
00:08:24 --> 00:08:26 be part of it but i just find the gameplay to
00:08:26 --> 00:08:30 be really just lacking and repetitive I agree.
00:08:30 --> 00:08:33 And drawn out. So I guess my question for our
00:08:33 --> 00:08:36 listeners is that if you have played this game
00:08:36 --> 00:08:39 before, let us know what you feel. If you like
00:08:39 --> 00:08:42 all these shooting scenes or if you agree with
00:08:42 --> 00:08:46 Leah that it sucks. Comment below. Send us your
