He's ASKING For Swampass | Uncharted 1 | Part 1

Welcome to Uncharted 1! In part one, we analyze our first gameplay video where we we join Nathan Drake in his search for Sir Francis Drake's treasure. Notably, we talk about Nathan's lack of survival instincts (maybe don't run in FRONT of the torpedo?), the irresistibility of a shoulder holster, and is that Neal McDonough? Also, is Sully a slut... 🤔

Don't forget to watch or play along - gameplay is posted weekly on our YouTube channel! We'll continue to play Uncharted: Drake's Fortune and analyze it in our podcast - join us in the coming weeks as join Nathan Drake on the trail to El Dorado.

00:00:00 --> 00:00:03 In this episode, is this our first barefoot firefight?
00:00:04 --> 00:00:10 And there's blood everywhere. And soup. I'm confused
00:00:10 --> 00:00:14 as well. Thank you for coming back for more replay
00:00:14 --> 00:00:17 reviews. My name is Leah. And my name is Kathy.
00:00:17 --> 00:00:19 We are two friends who are here to replay, review,
00:00:19 --> 00:00:22 and analyze your favorite video games. And since
00:00:22 --> 00:00:24 Kathy has never seen the games before, it helps
00:00:24 --> 00:00:27 me view them through her fresh eyes. Almost like
00:00:27 --> 00:00:28 I'm discovering them again for the first time.
00:00:29 --> 00:00:31 We hope it'll be a similar experience for you.
00:00:38 --> 00:00:41 New game. Welcome to November. I'm excited for
00:00:41 --> 00:00:44 this game. I think it'll be a good one. Glad
00:00:44 --> 00:00:47 you're liking it so far because this is Kathy's
00:00:47 --> 00:00:51 pick for the year. For the season. Let's get
00:00:51 --> 00:00:54 into it, I guess. Scene one. It starts out, we
00:00:54 --> 00:00:57 get it like a camcorder POV and a woman saying
00:00:57 --> 00:01:00 that they found the coffin of Sir Francis Drake.
00:01:00 --> 00:01:03 And we quickly learn that Nathan is a descendant
00:01:03 --> 00:01:06 of Sir Francis, but she is not very quick to
00:01:06 --> 00:01:10 believe him. And it makes sense that it's maybe
00:01:10 --> 00:01:14 some inside information being passed down through
00:01:14 --> 00:01:17 generations that would lean to him instead of
00:01:17 --> 00:01:20 another outsider. She doesn't believe him because
00:01:20 --> 00:01:23 her research. Indicates that he never had children.
00:01:23 --> 00:01:27 So she has that, but Nathan has Sir Francis Drake's
00:01:27 --> 00:01:30 ring. I totally missed it because my next note
00:01:30 --> 00:01:32 is that he has a ring around his neck. Is it
00:01:32 --> 00:01:37 a dead fiancé? Is it a dead fiancé? So far off.
00:01:38 --> 00:01:43 So next, they pull, they winch, I think is the
00:01:43 --> 00:01:46 proper term. They winch a coffin out of the ocean.
00:01:46 --> 00:01:50 But it's empty, except for a small lockbox containing
00:01:50 --> 00:01:53 a journal. And in this scene, we learn that her
00:01:53 --> 00:01:57 show funded this expedition. And then they get
00:01:57 --> 00:01:58 attacked by pirates. And I have a note here.
00:01:58 --> 00:02:01 Why is he taking me off a little bit? Because
00:02:01 --> 00:02:05 he didn't get a permit to be here. So they can't
00:02:05 --> 00:02:09 call for help. I'm more concerned about how this
00:02:09 --> 00:02:11 partnership began and why she relying on him
00:02:11 --> 00:02:14 so much when he seems like the type that isn't
00:02:14 --> 00:02:17 going to be doing things through the right channels,
00:02:17 --> 00:02:19 which obviously he proves is correct. So I don't
00:02:19 --> 00:02:22 know why she didn't. do some of the permitting
00:02:22 --> 00:02:24 and how is there not a team that supports her
00:02:24 --> 00:02:27 if it's for a show that's sponsored by someone
00:02:27 --> 00:02:30 else she is on the phone with someone later so
00:02:30 --> 00:02:34 i i kind of would say it's more on them for not
00:02:34 --> 00:02:36 dotting their i's and crossing their t's but
00:02:36 --> 00:02:40 i could also see nathan kind of like sweet talking
00:02:40 --> 00:02:42 around it you know like not lying about it but
00:02:42 --> 00:02:45 not outright saying yeah so we don't have a permit
00:02:45 --> 00:02:49 but either way put her in a bad position So they're
00:02:49 --> 00:02:51 rescued from the firefight by someone named Sully,
00:02:52 --> 00:02:55 who Nathan seems to know, obviously. And then
00:02:55 --> 00:02:57 we learn that the woman's name is Elena Fisher.
00:02:58 --> 00:03:02 Who's Sully? Is that the third person in their
00:03:02 --> 00:03:06 team? Can we rely on him? Yeah, it'll seem more
00:03:06 --> 00:03:10 like Nathan knows him than Elena. So I'm not
00:03:10 --> 00:03:13 sure what that relationship is. Like, he doesn't
00:03:13 --> 00:03:15 seem to be his father or his uncle or anything,
00:03:15 --> 00:03:18 but he seems significantly older. I would like
00:03:18 --> 00:03:21 to know how that came to be, that partnership.
00:03:22 --> 00:03:24 Also, during the whole fight with the pirates,
00:03:24 --> 00:03:27 do pirates just normally lurk in the sea? I know
00:03:27 --> 00:03:30 they're in the middle of the ocean and whatnot,
00:03:30 --> 00:03:34 but the coincidence of them meeting pirates as
00:03:34 --> 00:03:37 soon as they were able to fish something out
00:03:37 --> 00:03:39 of the sea, and how were they able to do that?
00:03:40 --> 00:03:42 I'm a bit confused. Everything's happening quite
00:03:42 --> 00:03:46 quickly. Yeah, I could see them having. radar
00:03:46 --> 00:03:50 capabilities at this point, but you're right,
00:03:50 --> 00:03:52 the timing of them just pulling the coffin out
00:03:52 --> 00:03:56 is suspicious. In this plane that Sully flew
00:03:56 --> 00:04:00 in to the rescue, they board and we learn that
00:04:00 --> 00:04:04 the diary they found is Drake's lost diary. Nathan
00:04:04 --> 00:04:07 says that he faked his death and was onto something
00:04:07 --> 00:04:10 big, and he thinks the something big was Eldorado.
00:04:11 --> 00:04:14 However, the last page was torn out of the journal.
00:04:14 --> 00:04:18 What a coincidence that it's gone. What they
00:04:18 --> 00:04:23 need is gone. I don't quite understand why this
00:04:23 --> 00:04:27 diary is in a sealed box, which is in another
00:04:27 --> 00:04:30 bigger box. Yeah, is whoever left this here hoping
00:04:30 --> 00:04:33 like, oh, no one will disturb a body in a coffin?
00:04:34 --> 00:04:38 Maybe. And if you're trying to hide it, either
00:04:38 --> 00:04:41 you're coming back for it or you don't want anyone
00:04:41 --> 00:04:43 else to find it. And if that's the case, burn
00:04:43 --> 00:04:47 it. So my inclination is that someone was coming
00:04:47 --> 00:04:51 back for this. We'll never know. Any notes before
00:04:51 --> 00:04:55 they ditch Elena? No. Do you want to describe
00:04:55 --> 00:04:59 that scene or should I? You can go ahead. I didn't
00:04:59 --> 00:05:02 write good enough notes. Okay, I didn't. All
00:05:02 --> 00:05:08 I have is they ditch Elena. So they're safely
00:05:08 --> 00:05:10 docked somewhere. Nathan and Sully are discussing
00:05:10 --> 00:05:13 what to do while Elena's on the phone with her.
00:05:13 --> 00:05:16 production company, I guess. So it convinces
00:05:16 --> 00:05:18 Nathan, like, they have to ditch her. So they
00:05:18 --> 00:05:21 just leave her. I appreciate them not killing
00:05:21 --> 00:05:25 her, because I thought that's the other way they
00:05:25 --> 00:05:27 were going to go about it. I don't know exactly
00:05:27 --> 00:05:31 how ethical these mean characters are quite yet,
00:05:31 --> 00:05:35 so I wouldn't be surprised if they decided to
00:05:35 --> 00:05:37 just kill her, but I'm kind of glad they didn't
00:05:37 --> 00:05:40 go that way. Anything else before chapter two?
00:05:42 --> 00:05:45 Nope. All right, so using the journal or the
00:05:45 --> 00:05:48 diary, Nathan and Sully begin their search for
00:05:48 --> 00:05:51 what they believe is El Dorado. They find some
00:05:51 --> 00:05:55 sort of temple, but they don't find the treasure.
00:05:55 --> 00:05:58 And Sully gets frustrated. And here's where we
00:05:58 --> 00:06:02 learn that he's in debt. And he's, like, depending
00:06:02 --> 00:06:07 on finding a lost ancient treasure to pay down
00:06:07 --> 00:06:12 his debt. He's taken too many risks in his life
00:06:12 --> 00:06:14 because why would you rely on something that
00:06:14 --> 00:06:18 may or may not exist to cover all your debt?
00:06:19 --> 00:06:22 Mm -hmm. Seems stupid, maybe. Don't be gambling
00:06:22 --> 00:06:25 and going to brothels if you don't have the money.
00:06:26 --> 00:06:29 Seems to me he could just run away to a new island
00:06:29 --> 00:06:32 and just leave his debt behind, but to each their
00:06:32 --> 00:06:36 own. How old is Nathan supposed to be in this
00:06:36 --> 00:06:38 game? Because he looks mature, but he doesn't
00:06:38 --> 00:06:40 quite act that way. So I'm a bit confused. I
00:06:40 --> 00:06:42 was wondering that. Let's Google it. But he does
00:06:42 --> 00:06:44 look really good. I made a comment while we're
00:06:44 --> 00:06:46 watching it. Something about the shoulder harness
00:06:46 --> 00:06:50 really makes a guy look great. There's something
00:06:50 --> 00:06:53 about a shoulder holster that just looks good.
00:06:54 --> 00:06:58 He, according to Google AI, so asterisked by
00:06:58 --> 00:07:03 this, he was supposed to be 31. So farther in
00:07:03 --> 00:07:06 this temple thing, they find a spot where they
00:07:06 --> 00:07:10 think what must have been El Dorado was, but
00:07:10 --> 00:07:13 it's now missing. They think it's a golden man,
00:07:14 --> 00:07:16 he says. I don't know. And then they decide to
00:07:16 --> 00:07:19 follow the drag marks from when it was taken.
00:07:19 --> 00:07:23 They lead to a ship, a German U -boat, stuck
00:07:23 --> 00:07:26 on a waterfall. Nathan's like, oh, it must have
00:07:26 --> 00:07:29 come up here in flood season and got stuck. Does
00:07:29 --> 00:07:32 the water rise? A thousand feet in flood season?
00:07:32 --> 00:07:36 I was going to ask that question, too. I think
00:07:36 --> 00:07:40 it's very clever to commute by boat during flood
00:07:40 --> 00:07:43 season, but what kind of area floods so much
00:07:43 --> 00:07:48 that it would do that? Right. I find it interesting,
00:07:49 --> 00:07:52 but we'll let it slide. That's my last note on
00:07:52 --> 00:07:55 Chapter 2. Are you ready for Chapter 3? One more
00:07:55 --> 00:07:59 comment on Chapter 2. I'm feeling kind of nervous
00:07:59 --> 00:08:03 about... Nathan Drake just blindly trusting Sully
00:08:03 --> 00:08:05 to hold on to his journal. I don't understand
00:08:05 --> 00:08:09 why he gave it to Sully to hold on to. I guess
00:08:09 --> 00:08:12 because he had to jump in the water, maybe? What
00:08:12 --> 00:08:14 if Sully wasn't there when he had the journal?
00:08:14 --> 00:08:16 What is he going to do with it? Yeah, I felt
00:08:16 --> 00:08:18 like he should have been prepared for that. Like,
00:08:18 --> 00:08:21 you could have had a dry bag on you. Okay, chapter
00:08:21 --> 00:08:25 three. Nathan makes his way onto the ship. He
00:08:25 --> 00:08:30 walks on and... Sully's like, what do you see?
00:08:30 --> 00:08:31 Or something. And Nathan's like, there's blood
00:08:31 --> 00:08:36 everywhere. And soup. What? So I'll show you
00:08:36 --> 00:08:42 because I don't understand. I'll go full screen.
00:08:42 --> 00:08:46 What does that mean? I think there's maybe cans
00:08:46 --> 00:08:48 of soup. And all I can think of the relevance
00:08:48 --> 00:08:51 is like, they left food here, right? So it's
00:08:51 --> 00:08:55 like, maybe they all died because if they got
00:08:55 --> 00:08:56 stuck here, they would have eaten all the soup,
00:08:56 --> 00:09:00 right? irritated at Nathan in this scene for
00:09:00 --> 00:09:03 not having great communication skills with Sully
00:09:03 --> 00:09:05 because he talks about him and then Sully will
00:09:05 --> 00:09:08 say something and he just doesn't respond because
00:09:08 --> 00:09:11 if I'm Sully, I think something killed Nathan.
00:09:11 --> 00:09:17 Well, he does find a dead person which they have
00:09:17 --> 00:09:21 a Spanish coin on them. He also finds the missing
00:09:21 --> 00:09:25 journal page which is a map and figures out where
00:09:25 --> 00:09:30 it indicates to go. based off of a map on the
00:09:30 --> 00:09:34 ship, a German map. So we're communicating with
00:09:34 --> 00:09:36 Sully, telling him what we found, and then all
00:09:36 --> 00:09:39 of a sudden he goes silent. Nathan exits the
00:09:39 --> 00:09:43 boat, but not before tripping a torpedo. He continues
00:09:43 --> 00:09:47 to swim where the torpedo would hit him. I know.
00:09:47 --> 00:09:50 He couldn't move a little bit to the side. He
00:09:50 --> 00:09:55 gets out of the water, where we see Gabriel Roman.
00:09:56 --> 00:09:58 Who looks like... Ah, what's that guy's name?
00:09:58 --> 00:10:02 Band of Brothers. McDonough. Neil McDonough.
00:10:03 --> 00:10:06 If that's how you pronounce it. Yes! I was...
00:10:06 --> 00:10:09 Right? It's so funny you say this because for
00:10:09 --> 00:10:12 me, this guy, I was going to say that he looks
00:10:12 --> 00:10:17 like Sean Cahill, which he is the lawyer in Suits.
00:10:17 --> 00:10:19 But I didn't know that he was in Band of Brothers.
00:10:19 --> 00:10:22 I... actor from Suits, and I'm like, that's the
00:10:22 --> 00:10:24 guy, but I knew you've never seen Suits, so I
00:10:24 --> 00:10:27 never said anything about that. Only for you
00:10:27 --> 00:10:29 to know exactly who I'm talking about, because
00:10:29 --> 00:10:32 he starred in Band of Brothers. Look at that.
00:10:32 --> 00:10:34 We actually know the same reference for once.
00:10:36 --> 00:10:40 He also has a sidekick, a partner named Navarro.
00:10:40 --> 00:10:43 They have Sully at gunpoint, and we find out
00:10:43 --> 00:10:46 that Sully owes him money. So is this the debt
00:10:46 --> 00:10:49 he was talking about? It has to be, but how did
00:10:49 --> 00:10:53 this guy get there? And why so eager that you
00:10:53 --> 00:10:55 would travel deep into the forest of, where are
00:10:55 --> 00:10:59 they, Brazil? I don't know. Yeah. No idea. Okay.
00:11:00 --> 00:11:04 Well, how much does he owe him if they're doing,
00:11:05 --> 00:11:06 you know, like you said, that they're going to
00:11:06 --> 00:11:09 all this trouble to track them down? Does it
00:11:09 --> 00:11:11 have anything better to do with his life than
00:11:11 --> 00:11:15 to track him down? I wonder if Sully, if the
00:11:15 --> 00:11:17 debt is more than just money. Probably slept
00:11:17 --> 00:11:22 with his wife with how slutty he is. So they
00:11:22 --> 00:11:24 make him hand over the map, but then they shoot
00:11:24 --> 00:11:28 Sully anyway. And then the ship explodes. This
00:11:28 --> 00:11:34 diary that Nate gave him, where is it? Did Sully
00:11:34 --> 00:11:38 already give it to Gabriel Roman? So it's the
00:11:38 --> 00:11:42 map that they're handing over. So as far as we
00:11:42 --> 00:11:45 know, Sully still has the diary. Okay. And I
00:11:45 --> 00:11:49 don't know if Nathan handed over the map. Do
00:11:49 --> 00:11:53 we need to watch it again? I need to know what
00:11:53 --> 00:11:55 kind of genes they are to be able to stay dry
00:11:55 --> 00:11:58 so quickly. Right? Why would you pick genes in
00:11:58 --> 00:12:01 this climate? You're just asking for swamp ass.
00:12:02 --> 00:12:05 And trench foot. So I think he took two maps
00:12:05 --> 00:12:09 from the boat. Yes. The German one and the missing
00:12:09 --> 00:12:12 page. So he probably gave them the missing page
00:12:12 --> 00:12:16 or the German map. The German map. Gotcha, gotcha.
00:12:17 --> 00:12:19 But yeah, then he runs through the forest where
00:12:19 --> 00:12:22 he runs into Elena who rightfully punches him
00:12:22 --> 00:12:26 in the face. I like her. In this situation, is
00:12:26 --> 00:12:30 it okay to leave Sully to die? Because if Sully
00:12:30 --> 00:12:33 survived, don't you think Sully would be mad
00:12:33 --> 00:12:36 that you left him to die? Like, we don't have
00:12:36 --> 00:12:40 him confirmed to die. It didn't look good. He
00:12:40 --> 00:12:42 was just gonna get shot if he tried. So I understand
00:12:42 --> 00:12:45 why he left him. I don't think he wanted to leave
00:12:45 --> 00:12:49 him. I think he thought he had to. But yeah,
00:12:49 --> 00:12:51 he runs into Elena and she's, I agree, I like
00:12:51 --> 00:12:54 her. She's like, actually seems to feel bad about
00:12:54 --> 00:12:57 Sully. How did they not get caught? The people
00:12:57 --> 00:13:00 were just running right past them. Are they blind?
00:13:01 --> 00:13:04 And he's wearing white in the jungle. Like, you're
00:13:04 --> 00:13:07 gonna stand out. So they shoot and run their
00:13:07 --> 00:13:10 way through, back through the temple where I
00:13:10 --> 00:13:13 think Elena stashed a jeep. And they use this
00:13:13 --> 00:13:16 to make their getaway. But it pisses me off because
00:13:16 --> 00:13:20 he gets in the car and then waits. Hit the gas.
00:13:20 --> 00:13:24 I think he wants to get shot. They seem to have
00:13:24 --> 00:13:27 made an escape and are later in a plane. But
00:13:27 --> 00:13:30 they get shot at. So they have to parachute out.
00:13:31 --> 00:13:35 Who's shooting at them? Is it Roman's people?
00:13:35 --> 00:13:39 I assume so. I'm kind of irritated that he gives
00:13:39 --> 00:13:44 Elena the... and then he's like, okay, I need
00:13:44 --> 00:13:48 to keep driving this plane. What else? What are
00:13:48 --> 00:13:50 you going to do with this plane, Nathan? I think
00:13:50 --> 00:13:53 he even is like, what am I doing? They're not
00:13:53 --> 00:13:55 going to land in the same spot. How is he going
00:13:55 --> 00:13:58 to find her? Right. Which is what ends up happening.
00:13:58 --> 00:14:02 We see him hanging from an old statue and we
00:14:02 --> 00:14:05 don't see her anywhere. And that's where this
00:14:05 --> 00:14:10 gameplay video ends. Yeah. So far, questionable
00:14:10 --> 00:14:14 choices from Nathan. He seems a little immature,
00:14:14 --> 00:14:17 but I like him. I like him. I like him fine.
00:14:17 --> 00:14:21 Maybe this is just because I'm watching Sleeping
00:14:21 --> 00:14:26 Dogs, but the vibes I'm getting is similar to
00:14:26 --> 00:14:31 Wei. Don't know exactly what or how or why. It's
00:14:31 --> 00:14:34 a confidence, I think. They're both confident.
00:14:34 --> 00:14:36 Even when they're making mistakes, confident
00:14:36 --> 00:14:38 about it. I'm really looking forward to getting
00:14:38 --> 00:14:41 to know more about Nathan Drake and doing the
00:14:41 --> 00:14:44 deep dive analysis on his character arc. Just
00:14:44 --> 00:14:46 because I think it's very promising that maybe
00:14:46 --> 00:14:49 he starts out as this immature, confident, slightly
00:14:49 --> 00:14:54 egotistical guy. But maybe he's going to do great
00:14:54 --> 00:14:57 things and he's going to be protective of Elena.
00:14:58 --> 00:15:01 I don't know. We'll find out. We will find out.
00:15:03 --> 00:15:06 Well, I'm excited to keep this series going,
00:15:06 --> 00:15:09 despite me not enjoying the gameplay aspect of
00:15:09 --> 00:15:11 this game. But yeah, next gameplay will be out
00:15:11 --> 00:15:14 tomorrow, and we'll be back next week. Sounds
00:15:14 --> 00:15:18 good. Audacity on one. Three, two, one. Thank
00:15:18 --> 00:15:20 you for listening, and don't forget to send in
00:15:20 --> 00:15:21 any questions, comments, or game suggestions.
